Windows 11 File Explorer and Memory Issues - What Happened and What GeiG Did

If you have been using Windows 11 over the past few months, you may have noticed your computer slowing down over time, or a blinding white flash every time you opened File Explorer in dark mode. These were not isolated incidents – they were recognised bugs affecting millions of Windows 11 users worldwide.

What was the issue?

First spotted in early 2026, Windows 11 developed a memory leak in its background update service. In simple terms, the computer was quietly holding on to memory it should have released, meaning the longer you left your PC running without a restart, the slower it became. For professionals and businesses running their machines all day, this was a real problem.

At the same time, Windows 11 users in dark mode were being hit by a jarring white flash every time they opened File Explorer – the window you use to browse your files and folders. It was a visual bug that had no impact on security but made daily use frustrating.

A third issue affected Windows Hello fingerprint login. After a major Windows update, some users found that their fingerprint data had been completely wiped, forcing them to re-register their fingerprint from scratch. This was particularly inconvenient for business users relying on biometric login for security.

When was it fixed?

Microsoft released an optional preview update (KB5083631) on 30 April 2026, followed by the mandatory May 2026 Patch Tuesday update (KB5089549) on 12 May 2026, which resolved all three issues for all Windows 11 users.

What did GeiG do?

At GeiG, all Dade notebooks ship with Windows 11 Pro pre-installed and fully updated. As soon as the May 2026 Patch Tuesday update was released, we updated our device build configuration to include it. Any Dade notebook ordered after 12 May 2026 ships with these fixes already applied.

If you purchased your Dade notebook before this date, simply go to Settings, click Windows Update, and select Check for Updates to receive the fix automatically.

Our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm at support@geig.co.uk if you need any assistance.
