Windows Secure Boot Certificates Expiring in June 2026 - What You Need to Know

This one sounds technical but the impact is simple: if your Windows computer does not receive the right update before June 2026, it may refuse to start up. Here is what is happening and what GeiG has done to make sure your Dade device is protected.

What is the issue?

Every modern Windows computer uses something called Secure Boot. Think of it as a security check that happens before Windows even loads, making sure nothing malicious has interfered with your computer overnight. Secure Boot relies on digital certificates – essentially trusted stamps of approval – to verify that everything is in order.

The certificates that most Windows devices currently use are set to expire in June 2026. If a device does not receive updated certificates before that date, Secure Boot may fail, which in some cases can prevent the computer from starting at all.

Microsoft has been quietly rolling out updated certificates through Windows Update since early 2026. However, devices that have not received recent updates, or that have limited space on a specific hidden system partition, may not receive the new certificates in time.

When was this identified?

Microsoft publicly confirmed the certificate expiry timeline in April 2026 and has been including certificate updates in Patch Tuesday releases since then. The May 2026 update (KB5089549) includes the latest round of certificate updates.

There is also a separate known issue where the May 2026 update fails to install on some devices with very little free space on the EFI System Partition – a small hidden area of the hard drive. Affected devices show error code 0x800f0922 and roll back the update automatically.

What did GeiG do?

GeiG Dade notebooks ship with Windows 11 Pro and Windows Update enabled by default. We verified in May 2026 that all devices in our current production build include the updated Secure Boot certificates. Our devices also ship with adequate EFI System Partition space to receive future updates without running into the 0x800f0922 error that has affected some third-party devices.

If you are a Dade notebook owner and want to confirm your device is protected, go to Settings, Windows Update, click Check for Updates, and install any pending updates. If you see error code 0x800f0922, please contact our support team and we will guide you through the resolution.

GeiG support is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm at support@geig.co.uk.
